Changes at Repping Firm
by Steven Zeitchik, PW NewsLine -- Publishers Weekly, 3/8/2005
One of the hotter small agencies in the city is closing its doors and re-opening in a somewhat different form. The Burnes & Clegg agency has been dissolved, according to an email from Sarah Burnes to industry editors and a follow-up exchange with PW, as a result of personal circumstances involving partner Bill Clegg.
Burnes says she will "move her list" but it is not yet known how. She says that list will include clients Mary Guterson, the bestselling Gossip Girl series and others.
Clegg represents a number of well-known authors, including Nicole Krauss, Haven Kimmel and Heather McGowan. It's unclear at press time if Burnes would be taking over these authors. One editor who has several authors with the agency noted that it was an unusual situation for authors to be orphaned because of changes with an agent but said he wasn't concerned. "There are redundancies built into the system," especially with the relationship between publisher and writer "that can help an author in a case like this."
