Authors on the Air: Lawson Celebrates

Domestic goddess Nigella Lawson stirred the pot on Live with Regis and Kelly today, talking about her most recent book, Feast: Food to Celebrate Life (Hyperion, $35), which PW said "makes the preparation of Thanksgiving, Christmas and other feasts seem so approachable and richly rewarding that it may coax even hardcore cynics or cowards to give roast turkey with all the trimmings a try. . . . [Lawson] has always proclaimed herself an eater rather than a chef, but what she is really is a marvelous, funny food writer for our pressured times. She knows exactly how to balance her relish of the earthy with just the right twist of smarty-pants, Oxford-inflected wit."

This morning on Good Morning America, John J. Nance raised the suspense level as he talked about his latest thriller, Saving Cascadia (S&S, $25). PW wrote: "In this spookily timely new thriller by Nance, human fiddling with nature triggers a series of earthquakes that may result in a 100-foot tsunami aimed at the heart of Seattle. . . . Nance, an expert in many areas, has written a previous nonfiction book on earthquake concerns (On Shaky Ground), and he builds suspense to a fever pitch in this all-too-credible nail-biter."

Today on the Diane Rehm Show, Patrick Radden Keefe, author of Chatter: Dispatches from the Secret World of Global Eavesdropping (Random House, $24.95; Random House Audio abridged cassette, $26.95, abridged CD, $29.95), was forthright in his discussion about how the government monitors conversations, who it targets and whether the information it gathers is helpful. PW's overt evaluation: "Intelligent and polemical, Keefe's study is sure to spark some political chatter of its own."
