American novelist, 1976 Nobel Laureate, and winner of the National Book Award for The Adventures of Augie March (1954), Herzog (1965), Mr. Sammler's Planet (1971), and lifetime achievement (1990). He also won the 1976 Pulitzer Prize for Humboldt's Gift. |

Novelist Carl Hiaasen received a special honor from Knopf chairman Sonny Mehta at the Random House Fall sales Conference. He was named an honorary Borzoi and presented with a blazer embroidered with a custom-designed crest that reads: Man of Letters, Champion of Causes--in Latin, no less.
