With winners outnumbering losers by a 15 to seven count, the Publishers Weekly Stock Index posted a 4.3% increase in May, beating the 2.7% gain posted by the Dow Jones Industrial Average. The big winner in the month was Audible, which had a 30.1% increase in its stock price fueled by a better than expected first quarter performance. Books-A-Million also beat Wall Street forecasts, leading to a 12.2% increase. On the downside, Hastings Entertainment had a disappointing first quarter, contributing to a 10.8% decline in its stock price, the biggest decline in May. Advanced Marketing Services' stock continued its steady slide, falling 8.1%. In May, two companies initiated stock splits: McGraw-Hill had a 2-for-1 split, while Courier Corp. had a 3-for-2 split.
