'Chronicle' Back to Books

by Rachel Deahl -- Publishers Weekly, 10/10/2005

Once under the same corporate umbrella as Chronicle Books, The San Francisco Chronicle is getting into the book business on its own with the establishment of The San Francisco Chronicle Press. The new press has released two titles by newspaper staffers, The San Francisco Century and Mystical San Francisco, and its list will be fueled entirely by talent from the paper's staff, with distribution through Sterling. The San Francsico Chronicle Press is run by the paper's deputy editor, Narda Zacchino, who said the new publishing effort will focus on packaging the paper's previously published content in book form. Set for the spring is a cookbook by food columnist Tara Duggan.

Zacchino also said that The San Francisco Chronicle Press will be able to produce books at a lower cost than the average publisher by utilizing the paper's editors and designers.
