Mary Magdalene, Politics and Prayer: Spring 2006 Religion (Abingdon Press to Judson Press)
Compiled by Robert Dahlin and Charles Hix, edited by Lynn Garrett -- Publishers Weekly, 2/13/2006
Will I ever be able to write about religion publishing again without referring to The Da Vinci Code? Maybe next year. For now the impact of Dan Brown's still-bestselling novel-and anticipation of the film version set to open May 19-continues to be evident, with significant numbers of spring books on alternative views of the development of Christianity, including plenty of conspiracy theories about church cover-ups. Mary Magdalene has especially caught the imaginations of publishers, with houses as varied as Inner Traditions, Monkfish, Our Sunday Visitor, Oxford, Sounds True, Tyndale and Welcome offering spring books on that mysterious woman. Publishers are also gearing up for the movie's release by bringing out paperback editions of the Code-related books they have published over the past couple of years.
Another heavily published topic is religion and politics, with a slew of major critiques of evangelical Christian entanglement in right-wing activism, many of them coming from evangelicals themselves. Randall Balmer's is Thy Kingdom Come: How the Religious Right Distorts the Faith and Threatens America-An Evangelical's Lament (Basic, July). Garry Wills weighs in with What Jesus Meant (Doubleday, Mar.), which charges that the religious right has twisted what Jesus had to say about power and wealth. Another Doubleday title is Politics of Jesus: Rediscovering the True Revolutionary Nature of What Jesus Believed and How It Was Corrupted by Obery Hendricks.
Jossey-Bass also has two books, Why the Christian Right Is Wrong: A Minister's Manifesto for Taking Back Your Faith, Your Flag, Your Future by Robin Meyers (May), and Red and Blue God, Black and Blue Church: Eyewitness Accounts of How American Churches are Hijacking Jesus, Bagging the Beatitudes, and Worshipping the Almighty Dollar by Becky Garrison (April; PW starred review Jan. 30). Beacon Press has Getting On Message: Challenging the Christian Right from the Heart of the Gospel (April) edited by Peter Laarman, a collection that includes a contribution from Gilead author Marilynne Robinson. In May, Zondervan publishes The Myth of a Christian Nation, with Gregory Boyd arguing that identification of the church with any political ideology is harmful to it and to society.
Broader looks at evangelicalism include religion reporter Mark Pinsky's A Jew Among the Evangelicals: A Suburban Jew Looks at Bible Belt Christianity (Westminster John Knox, Aug.) and Evangelicalism: An Americanized Christianity by Richard Kyle (Transaction, April). These books are among the first this year in a salvo of critical studies; major books on evangelicalism are coming this fall from publishers including Viking and Bloomsbury.
Solitary spiritual practices like prayer and meditation are hot; especially notable is the number of books on the Rule of St. Benedict--from publishers like Paraclete, Liturgical and Shambhala/New Seeds, with a modern take from Jossey-Bass--and other monastic/contemplative traditions. But there are also calls across the religious spectrum for engagement with social problems ranging from prison reform to hunger. Pop culture still provides fodder for ruminations on American religiosity, but after a spate of titles last fall, Kabbalah seems to have inspired few books this season.
A number of spring books of poetry deal with religious or spiritual themes. Knopf has two: Franz Wright's God's Silence and Brooks Haxton's Uproar: Antiphonies to Psalms (both Mar.). The Jewish Publication Society has Hills of Spices (June), a collection of poetry from the Bible edited by Rena Potok. Buddhist publisher Wisdom offers Lotus (Mar.) by Kaz Tanahashi, with photographs by Allan Baillie. From Inner Traditions comes The Forbidden Rumi: The Forbidden Poems of Rumi on Love, Heresy, and Intoxication (April) translated and with commentary by Nevit Ergin and Will Johnson. Also in the Persian tradition is This Heavenly Wine: Renditions from the Divan-i Jami by Nooreddin Abdurrahman Jami, translated by Vraje Abramian (Hohm Press, May).
As the listings that follow demonstrate, the choices in religion and spirituality are once again rich and varied.
