-- Publishers Weekly, 3/23/2006

Alan SmaglerLess than one year after being named to succeed Andrea Pinkney as publisher of Houghton Mifflin’s children’s publishing group, Alan Smagler has been appointed head of trade sales at Scholastic. Smagler will join Scholastic on April 10, and will be responsible for all sales efforts of the trade division. He replaces Gray Peterson, who will remain in a sales position reporting to Smagler.

In moving to Scholastic, Smagler will be teamed with the person he replaced at Houghton; Pinkney was appointed v-p, publisher of hardcover and early childhood last December. In addition, Smagler, who was senior v-p and associate publisher of Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing until October 2003, will be reunited with three former S&S colleagues: Suzanne Murphy, v-p, trade marketing; Julie Amitie, director of retail marketing and brand management; and Tracy van Straaten, who starts as v-p, trade publicity next Monday.
