Spiegel & Grau Land Orman & Company

Jim Milliot -- Publishers Weekly, 3/24/2006

The new name of the publishing division being created by Cindy Spiegel and Julie Grau at Doubleday will be called Spiegel & Grau. In their mission statement, the two women explained the choice of name by noting that while over the years publishing houses have been named after their male founders, “naming a house after its (female) founders feels both old-fashioned and radical.” The name, the statement adds, “reflects our personal commitment to stand behind our books.”

The first book that S&G will stand behind will be Suze Orman’s Women + Money to be released in March 2007. Grau was Orman’s editor when she was at Riverhead. Other acquisitions announced by S&G yesterday were of a first novel by Ed Conlon, author of Blue Blood, plus nonfiction works by Leslie Chang and Ta-Nahesi Coates.

S&G also added to their staff. Gretchen Koss, former associate director of publicity at Viking/Penguin, has been appointed director of publicity. Koss will report to Alison Rich, who has been promoted to executive director of publicity for Doubleday and S&G.
