Florence de Dampierre offers everyone a seat in Chairs: A History (Oct., $65) as the furniture historian explores chairs and their cultural context from classical Greece to the classic designs of today. Nearly 500 of the 546 illustrations she assembles are in color. Lush velvet upholstery, turquoise and gold accents are just some of the characteristics of the French Pompadour style, which is celebrated in The New Eighteenth-Century Style: Rediscovering a French Décor (Dec., $35), with text by Michèle Lalande and photos by Gilles Trillard. Queen Anne House: The America’s Victorian Vernacular (Oct., $50) by Janet W. Foster contains more than 200 photos by Radek Kurzaj and is said to be the first book devoted to this architectural style represented here by 21 homes, many not open to the public.

Mary Carol Garrity was called “one of the hottest little retailers” by Forbes magazine. A quarter-century ago, she founded Nell Hill’s, a home furnishings store in Atchison, Kans., and with its success subsequently established G. Diebolt’s (fabrics and bedding) and Garrity’s Encore (new and antique furniture), also in Atchison. In Nell Hill’s Entertaining in Style: Inspiring Parties and Seasonal Celebrations (Oct., $29.95), Garrity’s third book with Andrews McMeel, she suggests innovative decorating ideas, menus and tips for making guests welcome during each of the four seasons.

Splendid rural residences from Palm Springs to Napa Valley demand attention in California Country Style (Dec., $40) by Diane Dorrans Saeks. Photos by David Duncan Livingston depict socialite Denise Hale’s hacienda, Leslie Rudd’s winery estate and even the incomparable French Laundry restaurant’s rustic garden. Designers Guide to Color (Jan., $75), originally published in the 1980s, is here back in print in a boxed set of five volumes covering color combinations, brightness, pattern, tone and the way color combinations can represent emotion. In the Arts & Crafts Style (Oct., $29.95 paper) by Barbara Mayer, photos by Rob Gray, is now a reprint after selling 100,000 copies in cloth.

The contemporary look of floor coverings, windows, faucets, cupboards and more provides the focus for Interior Design Details: 1,000 New Ideas for the Home (Oct., $39.95) by Nonie Niesewand. Drawing inspiration from flats all around the world, Ana G. Canizares offers 150 Best Apartment Ideas (Oct., $29.95). Alejandro Bahamon experiments with color, texture, material and finishes in the latest DesignSource title, Room by Room DesignSource (Oct., $19.95).
