PowerHouse Hails 1970s New York
by Felicia Pride, PW Daily -- Publishers Weekly, 3/8/2007
Known for its cutting-edge cultural events, the art and photography publisher powerHouse Books is opening a new exhibition on March 9 at its Brooklyn office and event space entitled "That 70s Show: New York City in the 1970s," which will also serve as an umbrella event promoting several of the house's backlist and current titles.
Housed under the Brooklyn Bridge at powerHouse's combination office, arena and retail space, the exhibition is described as an "ode to a city long forgotten, a city on the brink of bankruptcy, brimming with uninhibited flavor and fearless adventure." The show runs until April 15 and boasts more than 35 artists, ranging from photographers to graffiti writers. Many of the artists are part of the powerHouse roster. The second issue of the powerHouse magazine is also the exhibition catalogue, also called That 70s Show, featuring book excerpts and editorial content from the publisher's authors and artists as well as from outside contributors. The arena's onsite bookstore is also stocked with titles from powerHouse and other publishers.
To launch the exhibit, powerHouse teamed with a variety of local partners and sponsors including Halcyon the Shop, a local Brooklyn music store and street art gallery. Look for old school hip-hop icon Grandmaster Caz and giveaway items at a press and preview reception on March 8.
