New Artists at SVA's Freshmeat
The annual School of Visual Arts Cartooning department's mini-comic convention, Freshmeat will be held Thursday April 19 from 6 to 8 pm. Students will sell mini-comics, artwork, and other creations. This year Freshmeat will coincide with the Cartooning and Illustration Junior thesis exhibition reception, in which select students work will be displayed. The exhibition will run from April 13th to 28th. The exhibition and Freshmeat will be held at the Visual Arts Gallery at 601 West 26 Street, on the 15th floor.
Naruto Slated for Latin America
Viz Media will release the Naruto manga series in Mexico and Brazil in April and May 2007. Naruto will be released through Grupo Editorial VID S.A, de C.V. in Mexico and by Panini Brazil in Brazil.
Drawn to Diversity Visits NYC
A group of students from Alfred University are organizing a program entitled Drawn to Diversity, which utilizes comics and cartoons, exhibits, drawing lessons and interactive play to teach about diversity and equality. The group will tour schools and libraries in the New York City Area in May. At the recent New York Comic-con, the Drawn to Diversity group presented their program to educators and librarians, and they are currently seeking out possible venues for the upcoming tour. Infringement Suit Filed Against Marvel
Creator Gary Friedrich has filed suit against several companies including Marvel Comics, claiming copyright and trademark violations involving the recent Ghost Rider Film. Friedrich's suit names Marvel, Sony Pictures and Take-Two Interactive and claims copyright and trademark violations involving the Ghost Rider film, merchandise based on the film's characters and Friedrich's own version of Ghost Rider. Friedrich claims he regained the copyrights to Ghost Rider in 2001 when Magazine Management failed to register work with the Copyright Office. Marvel Comics and Sony Pictures have currently not responded to the lawsuit.
APE Opens This Weekend
APE, the Alternative Press Expo, is set to take place this April 21 - 22 at the Concourse Exhibition Center in San Francisco, California. Tickets are still available for purchase online at the Comic-con.org Web site. Exhibitor applications are also available for download, however, convention organizers do warn that exhibitor space is limited. Several well-known creators such as Art Spiegelman, Gene Yang and Hope Larson have been listed as special guests of the convention. The APE Web site contains a programming schedule that lists several panels spotlighting some of the convention's guests of honor. Several comic-related events occurring after convention hours have also been listed.
