by Dermot McEvoy -- Publishers Weekly, 4/20/2007 7:37:00 AM
The inevitable has happened—the first book deal from the Imus disaster has gone to Rutgers Women’s basketball coach C. Vivian Stringer. In the wake of the Imus fiasco, Stringer--who was always composed throughout the affair--came to represent the Rutgers women’s basketball team to the media. The book, tentatively titled Stepping Up and Standing Tall, will be published by Crown Books in the first half of 2008. Freelance writer Laura Tucker will workwith Stringer on the book. Stringer was represented by Laurie Bernstein of Side by Side Literary Productions, Inc. The book was acquired by Crown senior editor, Rachel Klayman.
"The proposal came in an it’s really well done," says Tina Constable, Crown’s executive v-p for publicity. "She’s led an incredibly inspiring life. She’d made the decision to write the book more than a year ago. This wasn’t just a whim based on the Imus incident. It was clear that she put a lot of thought into it, it was very well written and she has led an extraordinary life. She’s the first black woman to coach a Division I team and the first to take three different teams to the Final Four."
