Bechdel Fun Home Tour
Alison Bechdel will tour nationally this summer to promote the June release of the paperback edition of her critically acclaimed comics memoir Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic. Bechdel will visit eight cities, including New York for both the MoCCA Art Festival (June 23-24) and Book ExpoAmerica (May 31-June 3) and San Diego for San Diego Comic-Con (July 26-29). Friends of Lulu Publishes Anthology
Friends of Lulu, an organization that supports reading and creating comics by girls and women, is releasing a comics anthology, A Girls' Guide to Guys' Stuff. The 176-page anthology includes over fifty female cartoonists ranging from all comics backgrounds. It will be in comics stores in July; however, the book is also available for preorder directly from Friends of Lulu website for $15.
Korean Comics Exhibit
Korean Comics: A Society Through Small Frames, an exhibition at the Queens Library in New York City, examines South and North Korean social changes through the country's comics. The works of twenty-one Korean cartoonists are featured in the show. The exhibition is at the International Research Center Gallery, 41-17 Main St. Flushing, New York. The show will run through June 5, 2007.
New Comics Scholarship Grant
The first winner of the annual First Helping Scholarship is Sean Ford, a student at the Center of Cartoon Studies in White River Junction, Vt.. Ford won for his mini-comic Only Skin. He will receive a five day internship at First Second books, free admission to the MoCCA Arts Festival, a $100 gift certificate and a one year membership to MoCCA. Also, his comic will be showcased on the First Second website. The scholarship was announced jointly by First Second Books, the Center for Cartoon Studies, and the Museum of Comics and Cartoon Art.
Black Faces in Comics
"Looking For A Face Like Mine," an exhibition examining both the role of African Americans in American comics as creators and characters, opened at the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art, May 12. The exhibition is curated by professor William H. Foster, a comics creator, scholar and historian who has long studied the role of African Americans in the comics industry. Foster is also the author a book on the subject by the same name. The exhibition will run until September 10th at MoCCA's exhibition space in New York City's SoHo district.
Book Club Picks Mouse Guard
Doubleday Entertainment has picked up David Petersen's acclaimed fantasy adventure Mouse Guard: Fall 1152 as an alternate for the Science Fiction Book Club's summer cycle. Originally published as a periodical series, Mouse Guard has just been released in a hardcover trade edition from Archaia Studios Press. A paperback edition is due from Villard in 2008.
