Books Expo America, the annual book industry convention, opens Friday, June 1 at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York City, and graphic novels will be covered in several sessions. The schedule of comics-oriented programming follows:
Friday June 1
10:00 a.m.- 10:30 a.m.
Upfront & Unscripted: room 1E05 Javits. A conversation between PWCW's Calvin Reid and Kurt Hassler, Yen Press co-publisher and former Borders manga and graphic novel buyer.
1:00 p.m. – 1:30 p.m..
Upfront & Unscripted: room 1E05 Javits. PW The Beat's Heidi Macdonald interviews novelist Laurell K. Hamilton on the adaptation of her novels into comics.
2:30 p.m. – 3:30p.m.
Graphic Novel Buzz: room 1E03 Javits. PWCW's Calvin Reid moderates a panel of editors and publishers on their forthcoming titles. Panel includes Chris Warner (Dark Horse); Karen Berger (DC/Vertigo and Minx); Beth Kawasaki (Viz); Chris Oliveros (D&Q); Mike Kiley (Tokyopop); Kurt Hassler (Yen Press); and Ruwan Jayatilleke (Marvel).

Graphic Novels 360 Degrees: room 1E03 Javits.First Second's Mark Siegel moderates a panel that includes cartoonist Al Bechdel (Fun Home), Bookazine's John Davis, Robinson McNally's Jessica Stockton and Booklist'sStephanie Zvirin.

Discovering, Assessing and Buying Graphic Novels for Your library: room 1E02 Javits. Brodart's John Shableski moderates a panel that includes the Unshelved guys, Mike Pawuk (Cuyahoga County Public Library) and others.
