Just weeks after leaving her position at Disney as v-p, editor-in-chief and associate publisher of Global Books, Brenda Bowen has landed at HarperCollins Children's Books, where she will launch a yet to be named imprint. Bowen will begin her new position June 18 and report to Susan Katz, president and publisher of HarperCollins Children's Books.
Bowen will be responsible for acquiring a range of books for all age groups, with a focus on attracting new authors and artists. Bowen will look for graphic novels, books on cultural trends and titles with "global reach," said Sandee Roston, executive director of publicity. The books will be published in all formats. Bowen said she will publish books encompassing "the literary and the commercial; the traditional and the ground-breaking." Bowen will be hiring a staff, Roston said, though the size has not yet been determined. Bowen has held a variety of positions during her 26 years in children's publishing, at Hyperion Books for Children and Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing, among other places. She has edited books that have won the Caldecott Honor, the Newbery Medal and the National Book Award. Katz said Bowen's "impressive background of identifying and publishing national and international bestsellers as well as award-winning literary titles will complement our thriving publishing program."
