New Titles Rule In May

Lots of changes on the international lists in May, especially in France, where five of the six top spots are occupied by new titles. The aftermath of the French presidential elections brought more books about the loser (The Camp) and winner (A Power Named Desire). Works on new president Nicolas Sarkozy also debuted in the fourth and fifth slots.
It was a clean sweep in fiction, with new titles claiming spots one through four. Landing at #1 was the seventh novel from Marc Levy; according to the author’s Web site, his books have sold more than 12 million copies worldwide. Pocket has published two Levy titles in the U.S. In the fourth spot was another international favorite, Mary Higgins Clark, with I Heard That Song Before.
Debuting at #2 in Germany was Cecelia Ahern’s Don’t Miss Me. The Irish-born Ahern has had hits in the U.S. with Hyperion, which will publish Don’t Miss Me as There’s No Place Like Here in hardcover in January. Her first book, P.S., I Love You, was optioned by Warner Bros. The film is due in theaters in December and Hyperion has a tie-in planned. The #1 spot in the Czech Republic was claimed by popular novelist Michal Viewegh, whose previous books have sold nearly 850,000 copies in that country.
