Authors on the Air: Aaron Burr, Unwrapped; Holocaust Moms; Jessica Mitford’s Letters

Compiled by Diane Patrick -- Publishers Weekly, 7/3/2007 7:23:00 AM

This morning, Diane Rehm interviewed ACLU executive director Anthony Romero and journalist Dina Temple-Raston, authors of In Defense of Our America: The Fight for Civil Liberties in the Age of Terror (Doubleday, $24.95; Tantor Media unabridged CD, $29.99).

Bob Edwards talked to Nancy Isenberg about Fallen Founder: The Life of Aaron Burr (Viking, $29.95; Penguin Audio unabridged CD, $39.95), which PW’s review deemed a “striking new biography. As this important book reminds us, America's founders behaved like ordinary human beings even when they were performing their extraordinary deeds.”

Authors on today’s Leonard Lopate Show:

Science reporter Stephen S. Hall investigated Size Matters: How Height Affects the Health, Happiness, and Success of Boys—and the Men They Become (Houghton Mifflin, $26). PW’s review found it “marshals a broad, deep range of information in this fascinating study. His interpretations of complicated science are readily accessible, and his journalistic style will suit both popular and academic readers.”

Ann Kirschner, author of Sala's Gift: My Mother's Holocaust Story (Free Press, $14), just out in paperback. PW found it a “moving account.... Kirschner has skillfully crafted her mother's documents, interspersed with a powerful and informed narrative.”

Artist Martin Lemelman recalled Mendel's Daughter: A Memoir (Free Press, $19.95). From PW’s review: “In what is clearly a labor of love, Lemelman has created a ‘memoir’ told in the voice of his mother, Gusta, a survivor of the Holocaust. Lemelman's subdued art gives the story its heart; with a combination of charcoal drawings and photographs, he creates a sense both of an almost mythical time gone by and the very real lives that were snuffed out.”

Singer/songwriter David Crosby on Since Then: How I Survived Everything and Lived to Tell About It (Putnam, $26.95).

For Wednesday, July 4:

Diane Rehm will rebroadcast an interview with NPR’s London bureau chief, Rob Gifford, author of China Road: A Journey into the Future of a Rising Power (Random House, $26.95).

The Bob Edwards Show revisits a conversation with historian Garry Wills about Henry Adams and the Making of America (Houghton Mifflin, $30). PW’s starred review had this to say: “With its revisionist stance, felicitous prose and compelling argument, Wills's book charts new directions as well.”

Authors on Wednesday’s Leonard Lopate Show:

Peter Sussman, editor of Decca: The Letters of Jessica Mitford (Knopf, $35). PW starred its review, saying, “Sussman has gathered an array of letters that capture Mitford's legendary wit, warmth and self-deprecating humor.... Mitford's letters crackle with wit and mordant observations.

Former Peace Corps volunteer Kris Holloway on Monique and the Mango Rains: Two Years with a Midwife in Mali (Waveland Press, $24.95). PW noted: “Holloway's moving account vividly presents the tragic consequences of inadequate prenatal and infant health care in the developing world and will interest all those concerned about the realities of women's lives outside the industrialized world.”

Betsy Krebs and Paul Pitcoff look Beyond the Foster Care System: The Future for Teens (Rutgers Univ. Press, $23.95).

Former Knicks point guard Walt Frazier explains The Game Within the Game (ESPN Books, $24.95).

Due to the nature of live programming, scheduling is subject to change. For more detailed information about author appearances on these shows and others as well as listings of book mentions and book reviews, see TitleSmart.
