Gene Yang’s American Born Chinese, published by First Second, was awarded an Eisner for Best New Graphic Album and Bill Willingham’s Fable series won four Eisners last night at the Will Eisner Comics Industry Awards, held each year during the annual San Diego Comic-con International.

It has been quite a year for Yang. American Born Chinese was also the first graphic novel ever nominated for the National Book Award (in children's literature) and the book was also awarded the 2007 Michael Printz prize for young-adult literature. Also at last night's ceremony, Paul Pope grabbed two Eisners for Vertigo’s Batman Year 100, while Alison Bechdel’s Fun Home won for Best Reality Based work. Darwyn Cooke won three Eisners and writer Ed Brubaker snatched two, his first after many nominations. Artist Hope Larson won a special recognition award for Gray Horses and Mouse Guard creator David Peterson received the Russ Manning Award for Most Promising Newcomer. This year’s Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer award went to Carr D’Angelo and Jud Meyers, owners of the Earth2 comics shop in Los Angeles.

For a complete listing of the winners of the 2007 Will Eisner Comics Industry Awards go the San Diego Comic-con website.
