Bad Day for O.J., Great Day for His Book

By Dermot McEvoy -- Publishers Weekly, 9/19/2007 5:22:00 AM

Late Tuesday afternoon Las Vegas prosecutors filed 10 felony counts against O.J. Simpson and his cohorts, including surprise charges of assault and kidnapping in connection with the robbery of Simpson sports memorabilia from two memorabilia dealers.

Simpson, who, according to reports, paid $125,000 in bail this afternoon to be released from custody, will be arraigned the week of October 22. The former football star, who claims the memorabilia was his and that he was just retrieving it, will plead not guilty to the 11 charges now filed against him. The charges include, among others, first-degree kidnapping, coercion and robbery.

On the publishing front, Beaufort Books announced that it was going back to press for an additional 50,000 copies of the repackaged Simpson confession, If I Did It; according to BookScan the title has sold 10,000 copies through Sunday night. Speaking to the added press the Simpson arrest has brought the book, Beaufort owner Eric Kampmann told the AP: "The arrest brought the whole question of O.J. and the law back into everybody’s consciousness."

As of this writing, If I Did It: Confessions of the Killer ranked #2 on Amazon.com and on BN.com.
