Jonah Goldberg Title Hacked at Amazon.com

By Dermot McEvoy -- Publishers Weekly, 10/30/2007 5:08:00 AM

Late last week the subtitle to Los Angeles Times columnist Jonah Goldberg’s new book was hacked and changed on Amazon.com, reported Editor & Publisher. Although the real title—Liberal Fascism—remained the same, the subtitle was changed to "The Totalitarian Temptation from When I Got My Advance Until I finally Hand in the Manuscript in 2011."

By Sunday evening the original subtitle had been restored: "The Secret History of the American Left from Mussolini to the Politics of Meaning."

The original book jacket, which has as its centerpiece a smiley-face with a Hitler mustache, remains in place as does other facts about the book, such as price, ISBN, pub date (January 8, 2008) and publisher (Doubleday) remain untouched.

The book description, usually supplied by the publisher, states:

"Liberal Fascism offers a startling new perspective on the theories and practices that define fascist politics. Replacing conveniently manufactured myths with surprising and enlightening research, Jonah Goldberg reminds us that the original fascists were really on the left, and that liberals from Woodrow Wilson to FDR to Hillary Clinton have advocated policies and principles remarkably similar to those of Hitler’s National Socialism and Mussolini’s Fascism."

An earlier subtitle, according to E&P, included Hillary Clinton, and still another, Hegel and Whole Foods.
