Authors on the Air: Otto Preminger, Unwrapped; The Beatles, Too; The Scandalous Gospel of Jesus
by Diane Patrick -- Publishers Weekly, 11/29/2007
Authors on today’s Leonard Lopate Show:
Foster Hirsch and his biography Otto Preminger: The Man Who Would Be King (Knopf, $35), which earned a PW starred review: “Meticulously researched, …this epic biography offers a multifaceted portrait of the Viennese-born filmmaker and reappraisal of his films. This is a long-overdue critical biography of the temperamental titan with a genius for self-promotion.”
Pulitzer-winner Joseph J. Ellis discussed his new book American Creation: Triumphs and Tragedies at the Founding of the Republic (Knopf, $26.95; RH Audio unabridged CD, $34.95). PW starred its review, saying “This subtle, brilliant examination of the period between the War of Independence and the Louisiana Purchase puts Ellis among the finest of America's narrative historians. Ellis's lucid, illuminating and ironic prose will make this a holiday season hit.”
On The Bob Edwards Show, Jonathan Gould sold Can't Buy Me Love: The Beatles, Britain, and America (Harmony, $27.50). In a starred PW Signature Review, Mark Rotella wrote “There have been several biographies of the band, but Gould leaves the gossip to others and instead relies on their music to tell the story. Page after page, you can hear the music; Gould's deft hand makes the book sing.”
Diane Rehm interviewed Actors Studio Drama School founder James Lipton, author of Inside Inside (Dutton, $27.95). From PW’s review: “Raising the curtain on his own memories, he traces the path of his multifaceted career. Along the way, theatrical truths emerge and amusing anecdotes abound since Lipton is a witty and engaging writer.”
On The View, comedian Steve Martin sat down with Born Standing Up: A Comic’s Life (Scribner, $25; S&S Audio unabridged CD, $29.95).
Tonight, Tavis Smiley hosts Rev. Peter Gomes, minister of Harvard University's Memorial Church, whose latest is The Scandalous Gospel of Jesus: What's So Good About the Good News? (HarperOne, $24.95; Tantor Media unabridged CD, $29.99). From PW’s starred review: “His tone is compassionate even when he chides those who fear conflict and change, but especially when he extols God's provision for the healing and care of all his creation, and not simply our little part of it.”
