Authors on the Air: Eat This Not That; Something About the Blues; The Madness of Mary Lincoln

-- Publishers Weekly, 1/11/2008

This morning, the Todayshow interviewed bestseller and Men’s Health editor-in-chief Dave Zinczenko, author of Eat This Not That: Thousands of Simple Food Swaps That Can Save You 10, 20, 30 Pounds-or More! (Rodale, $19.95).

Sexologist Bob Berkowitz visited Good Morning America, continuing to promote He's Just Not Up for It Anymore: Why Men Stop Having Sex, and What You Can Do About It (William Morrow, $25.95).

The Bob Edwards Show hosted California’s poet laureate Al Young, author of Something About the Blues: An Unlikely Collection of Poetry (Sourcebooks, $22.95), which includes a CD of Young's poetry readings backed by a live blues band.

Tonight, Larry King Live chats with Suzanne Somers, whose Ageless: The Naked Truth About Bioidentical Hormones (Three Rivers Press, $13.95) is newly out in paperback.

Authors on Book TV this weekend:

Pulitzer-winner Joseph Ellis, author of American Creation: Triumphs and Tragedies at the Founding of the Republic (Knopf, $26.95; RH Audio CD, $34.95). PW starred its review: “This subtle, brilliant examination of the period between the War of Independence and the Louisiana Purchase puts Ellis among the finest of America's narrative historians.”

Constitutional law professor Daniel Farber lectures on Retained By the People: The "Silent" Ninth Amendment and the Constitutional Rights Americans Don't Know They Have (Perseus, $26.95). PW found it "potentially an important book that offers a new approach to how courts should interpret the Constitution when balancing fundamental individual rights against government incursions, an approach Farber believes will hold up better to challenges than a due-process approach. Farber writes well for the general public and succeeds in building a case that will resonate with both liberals and populist-conservatives.”

Jonah Goldberg, author of Liberal Fascism: The Secret History of the American Left from Mussolini to the Politics of Meaning (Doubleday, $27.95), which PW considered a “provocative and well-researched book.”

Environmental activists Ted Nordhaus and Michael Shellenberger, authors of Break Through: From the Death of Environmentalism to the Politics of Possibility (Houghton Mifflin, $25; Blackstone Audio unabridged CD, $19.95). PW starred its review, deeming the book “a convincing, resonant and hopeful primer on ‘postenvironmentalism.’”

Michael Pollan rises up In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto (Penguin, $21.95; Penguin Audio unabridged CD, $29.95).

Mark Perry introduces Partners in Command: George Marshall and Dwight Eisenhower in War and Peace (Penguin, $29.95).

Jason Emerson explains The Madness of Mary Lincoln (Southern Illinois University Press, $29.95).

Due to the nature of live programming, scheduling is subject to change.

Booksellers can order these titles through Ingram at ipage.
