Authors on the Air: Williams’s Life Among the Dead; Harlan Coben’s Hold Tight;Mary Roach’s Bonk

by Diane Patrick -- Publishers Weekly, 4/15/2008

Today, Good Morning America had a visitation from British medium and clairvoyant Lisa Williams, who discussed her memoir Life Among the Dead (Simon Spotlight Entertainment, $24).

On The Early Show, Edgar-winner Harlan Coben promoted his new thriller Hold Tight (Dutton, $26.95; Brilliance Audio unabridged CD, $38.95), on sale today. PW starred review promised “Parents will find this compulsive page-turner particularly unnerving. A sadistic killer is at play in suburban Glen Rock, N.J., outside New York City, but somehow he's less frightening than the more mundane problems that send ordinary lives into chaos. The ‘this could be me’ factor lends poignancy to the thrills and chills.”

On the Today show, actress and bestseller Marilu Henner continued to Wear Your Life Well: Use What You Have to Get What You Want (Collins, $24.95).

The Diane Rehm Showtalked to PBS news anchor Jim Lehrer about his new novel Mack to the Rescue (Univ. of Oklahoma Press, $24.95), which PW called “the broadly satiric eighth entry in Lehrer's One-Eyed Mack series.”

Authors on today’s Bob Edwards Show:

Science writer Mary Roach, whose latest is Bonk: The Curious Coupling of Science and Sex (Norton, $24.95; Brilliance Audio CD, $39.25). PW said “Roach's ever-present eye and ear for the absurd and her loopy sense of humor make her a delectable guide through this unesteemed scientific outback. Roach's forays offer fascinating evidence of the full range of human weirdness, the nonsense that has often passed for medical science and, more poignantly, the extreme lengths to which people will go to find sexual satisfaction.”

Dame Helen Mirren, continuing to promote In the Frame: My Life in Words and Pictures (Atria, $35).

NPR's Morning Edition hosted journalist and Catholic convert David Gibson, author of The Rule of Benedict: Pope Benedict XVI and His Battle with the Modern World (HarperOne, $14.95). PW thought “Readers who have been watching the new pope for signals of what his papacy will bring will find this to be absorbing reading.”

Authors on today’s Leonard Lopate Show:

Gayle Greene, author of Insomniac (Univ. of California Press, $29.95). PW starred its review: “Supplementing her own experience with that of other chronic insomniacs and a look at the science of sleep, Greene offers an enjoyable and informative account that will provoke even readers who get their full eight hours a night.”

n+1 founding editor Keith Gessen and his first novel, All the Sad Young Literary Men (Viking, $24.95; Blackstone Audio unabridged CD, $24.95).

NFL legend and Heisman Trophy winner Herschel Walker, author of Breaking Free: My Life Wtih Dissociative Identity Disorder (Touchstone, $24.95).

Authors on tonight’s Tavis Smiley:

Cynthia Cooper explains Extraordinary Circumstances: The Journey of a Corporate Whistleblower (Wiley, $27.95), which PW found a “thorough and efficient narrative about the fantastic collapse of telecommunications giant WorldCom. Cooper is better and trumps other WorldCom accounts with a perspective available only from a business-smart insider with a conscience.”

Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Chris Hedges with his latest, I Don't Believe in Atheists (Free Press, $25; HighBridge unabridged CD, $26.95).

Due to the nature of live programming, scheduling is subject to change.

Booksellers can order these titles through Ingram at ipage.
