In a bid to expand Faber and Faber stateside, the joint owners of the imprint--FSG and Faber & Faber Ltd.--have tapped British editor Mitzi Angel to come on board in the newly created position of publisher. Faber and Faber Inc., which was established in 1982 as the North American outpost of the British house Faber and Faber Ltd., is currently overseen by FSG senior editor Denise Oswald. Under Angel's supervision the imprint will publish a broader range of titles, as well as more titles. According to FSG publisher Jonathan Galassi Faber and Faber Inc. will become more reflective of "Mitzi's own talents and tastes."Angel, who is currently editorial director of the HarperCollins UK division Fourth Estate, has published such titles as Ishmael Beah's A Long Way Gone; Yiyun Li's A Thousand Years of Good Prayer; and Nick Cohen's What's Left? Angel will be relocating from London to New York for her new position, which she will start in June.
Under the expansion plan, Faber Inc. will acquire world English rights to select titles jointly with Faber Ltd. while Angel is also expanding the U.S. imprint on its own, acquiring North American rights to other titles. Galassi said the goal is to take the existing U.S. imprint and "expand and deepen it" to, ultimately, "build the barnd in a new way here." Galassi said this means that Faber Inc., which he said now focuses primarily on performing arts and pop culture, will grow to be "a more full-range literary imprint." Galassi added that the expansion will likely see the imprint grow from a 20 to 24-title list to a 30 to 35-title one.
