Coffee House to Relocate

By Claire Kirch -- Publishers Weekly, 5/21/2008 8:10:00 AM

Coffee House Press is on the move. Literally. After being advised by the new owners of their office building in Minneapolis’s trendy warehouse district that they and all the other tenants must leave by the end of June, the publisher is relocating to northeast Minneapolis. The 24-year-old literary nonprofit press, which was housed in its 3,000 sq. ft. office for the past 19 years, is moving its six employees and four interns to a 3,400-sq. ft. space in the Grain Belt Building, an old beer bottling plant that’s now owned and managed by the nonprofit organization Artspace.

Artspace is dedicated to providing housing at below-market rents in renovated schools, factories, and other buildings in cities across the country for artists and arts organizations. The Grain Belt Building is located across the street from The Keg House, which houses the sales and marketing offices of Coffee House’s distributor, Consortium.

“It’s the best deal in town. It’s a beautiful space, and gives us a fresh, exciting start for our next 25 years,” Coffee House senior editor Chris Fischbach told said. Fischbach anticipates that the press now will be able to host author events. Coffee House will officially open for business in its new offices on July 14, and has made tentative plans to host an open house celebration in October, with special guest author Andrei Codrescu whose Jealous Witness is set for September.
