Zafon in Overseas YA Deal

by Matthew Thornton -- Publishers Weekly, 5/27/2008 1:57:00 PM

Bestselling The Shadow of the Wind author Carlos Ruiz Zafon, who made a seven-figure deal with Doubleday in March for a new book, is also hugely successful in the YA genre—and those books will soon be available to an English-speaking audience. Agent Tom Colchie is just beginning to go out with the U.S. submission, but U.K. rights (minus ANZ) have just been snapped up by Orion in a major preempt for four books; Colchie made the deal on behalf of Antonia Kerrigan in Barcelona. Prince of the Mists, Midnight Palace, September Lights and Marina together have over 3 million copies in print in Spain. The Shadow of the Wind has sold 2 million copies in English and 10 million worldwide.
