Entertainment Weekly’s 1,000th issue hits newsstands today and is devoted entirely to what the magazine calls the new classics: the best movies, TV shows, music albums, books and more of the past 25 years. Topping the list of the 100 best books are Cormac McCarthy’s The Road, J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Toni Morrison’s Beloved, Mary Karr’s The Liars’ Club and Philip Roth’s American Pastoral. The list features a few less obvious choices, too, including The Giver by Lois Lowry, Jimmy Corrigan by Chris Ware and The Predators’ Ball by Connie Bruck.
Jazzing up the main list are smaller top 10 lists from Elizabeth Gilbert and Neil Gaiman, as well as featurettes listing “5 Prolific Writers,” “Hit or Miss Casting in Film Adaptations” and other miscellany. EW editors will post a gallery of the books list and the Gilbert and Gaiman lists at www.EW.com the first week of July.
