ESPN Publishing has announced that ESPN The Magazine executive editor Steve Wulf will take over editorial at ESPN Books, the ESPN division dedicated to publishing sports titles. In his new position, Wulf will shape the editorial direction of books within the ESPN imprint and act as editor of those titles. Wulf will continue to contribute to ESPN The Magazine and report to Gary Hoenig, general manager and editorial director of ESPN Publishing.
ESPN Books was created in May 2004. Last month, ESPN Books and Ballantine announced a co-publishing alliance to publish 10 to 12 sports titles per year under the joint Ballantine and ESPN Books imprint.
Wulf said he will look to Ballantine to “give us support and guidance on how to make quality sports books.” He said his goal is to “make sure all the books that come out of here are keepers,” and not “quickie books.”
Wulf is a founding editor of ESPN The Magazine. Before joining ESPN, he was a senior writer at Time for four years, and also worked at Sports Illustrated for 17 years as a reporter, writer and editor.
