Authors on the Air: More Fancy Nancy; Havana Nocturne; Suck Your Stomach In

by Diane Patrick -- Publishers Weekly, 7/23/2008 7:51:00 AM

This morning on Today, author Jane O'Connor and illustrator Robin Preiss Glasser offered Fancy Nancy's Favorite Fancy Words: From Accessories to Zany (HarperCollins, $12.95), their latest in the bestselling Fancy Nancy kids’ series. PW starred its review: “Building on O'Connor and Glasser's series, ultimate girly-girl Fancy Nancy makes vocabulary glamorous in this A–Z compendium.”

Tonight, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart grills true-crime writer T.J. English on Havana Nocturne: How the Mob Owned Cuba and Then Lost It to the Revolution (William Morrow, $27.95; Tantor Media unabridged CD, $37.99). PW said “English presents an empire-building saga in which the ‘Havana Mob’ of American gangsters, led by visionary financier Meyer Lansky, controlled Cuba.”

Authors on The Leonard Lopate Show:

Edgar-winner Edward Dolnick, author of The Forger's Spell: A True Story of Vermeer, Nazis, and the Greatest Art Hoax of the Twentieth Century (Harper, $26.95). From PW’s starred review: “Dolnick's compelling look at how a forger worked his magic leads to one sad conclusion: there will always be eager victims waiting to be duped.”

Harvard professor Daniel Koretz, whose book is Measuring Up: What Educational Testing Really Tells Us (Harvard Univ. Press, $23.95).

Former Alaskan senator Mike Gravel (best known for releasing the Pentagon Papers) shared A Political Odyssey: The Rise of American Militarism and One Man's Effort to Stop It (Seven Stories, $17.95).

On The Bob Edwards Show, Washington Post reporter Michael Dobbs discussed One Minute to Midnight: Kennedy, Khrushchev, and Castro on the Brink of Nuclear War (Knopf, $28.95). PW starred its review: “Dobbs is a master at telling stories as they unfold and from a variety of perspectives. From first to last, this sustains Dobbs's case that crisis management is a contradiction in terms.”

Authors on The Book Report:

Forbes staff writer and fisherman Monte Burke, author of Sowbelly: The Obsessive Quest for the World-Record Largemouth Bass (Plume, $15). PW wrote “Burke admirably brings to life the people who enter into such a chase, and he finds good drama in the techniques and sacrifices necessary to pursue such a goal.”

All Things Southern host Shellie Rushing Tomlinson explained Suck Your Stomach In and Put Some Color On! What Southern Mamas Tell Their Daughters that the Rest of Y'all Should Know Too (Berkley, $14).

Popular Science journalist Dan Koeppel unwrapped Banana: The Fate of the Fruit That Changed the World (Hudson Street Press, $23.95). PW’s review had this to say: “The world's most humble fruit has caused inordinate damage to nature and man, and Koeppel embarks on an intelligent, chock-a-block sifting through the havoc.”

Chelsea Lately chats with Christopher Ciccone, still recalling Life with My Sister Madonna (Simon Spotlight Entertainment, $26.00; S&S Audio abridged CD, $29.95).

Due to the nature of live programming, scheduling is subject to change.
