Authors on the Air: Brideshead Revisited; Nick Sagan; Jeff Shaara
by Diane Patrick -- Publishers Weekly, 7/25/2008
Today in select theaters, the movie Brideshead Revisited opens, based on Evelyn Waugh’s 1945 novel (Back Bay Books, $14.99) and starring Emma Thompson and Michael Gambon.
The Bob Edwards Show hosted science fiction writer Nick Sagan, son of the late astronomer Carl Sagan and co-author of You Call This the Future? The Greatest Inventions Sci-Fi Imagined and Science Promised (Chicago Review Press, $14.95). PW called it “a delightful ‘expedition in search of the future,’ providing clear explanations of today's cutting-edge technologies in transportation, computers, weapons and domestic life to find where science fiction has become reality.”
On CBS Sunday Morning, Shirley MacLaine, whose Sage-ing While Age-ing (Atria, $14; S&S Audio abridged CD, $29.95) is newly out in paperback.
A few of this weekend’s authors on Book TV:
Jeff Shaara, whose latest is The Steel Wave: A Novel of World War II (Ballantine, $28; RH Audio abridged CD, $29.95). PW starred its review: “This keystone of the bestselling WWII trilogy dramatizes D-Day and ups the bar for military historicals, demonstrating that Shaara has hit full stride. The muscular prose, deft sense of military drama and relentless pacing are well suited for this crackerjack saga.”
Journalist Alison Bass experiences Side Effects: A Prosecutor, a Whistleblower, and a Bestselling Antidepressant on Trial (Algonquin Books, $24.95). PW wrote “This densely researched report adds to the growing literature on Big Pharma's efforts to sell blockbuster drugs and with its two crusading heroes seems ready for Hollywood. This story of determined do-gooders is inspiring.”
Ginger Strand, author of Inventing Niagara: Beauty, Power, and Lies (S&S, $25; Tantor Media CD, $24.99). PW had this to say: “With wit and passion, Strand explores the history of Niagara Falls and shows that the famous natural wonder is in reality a prime example of man's manipulation of nature, constantly exploited to attract tourists. Strand's provocative and iconoclastic book says much about how America has dominated nature, despoiled it and shrouded the offense in myth.”
Journalist and historian Anna Rubino, whose Queen of the Oil Club: The Intrepid Wanda Jablonski and the Power of Information (Beacon Press, $29.95), recalls the investigative reporter considered to be “the midwife of OPEC.”
Pulitzer Prize–finalist Bill Bishop works on The Big Sort: Why the Clustering of Like-Minded America is Tearing Us Apart (Houghton Mifflin, $25).
Due to the nature of live programming, scheduling is subject to change.
