Authors on the Air: The Way of the World; Letters to a Bullied Girl; The Night of the Gun

by Diane Patrick -- Publishers Weekly, 8/5/2008

Authors on this morning’s Today show:

Pulitzer-winning journalist Ron Suskind examined The Way of the World: A Story of Truth and Hope in an Age of Extremism (Harper, $27.95; HarperAudio CD, $39.95), also pubbing today. He also appeared on NPR’s Morning Edition, and tomorrow he visits Tavis Smiley.

Teenagers Olivia Gardner, Emily Buder and Sarah Buder, authors of Letters to a Bullied Girl: Messages of Healing and Hope (Harper, $14.95), which pubs today.

On Good Morning America, Kate Brennan shared her memoir In His Sights: A True Story of Love and Obsession (Harper, $24.95), just out today. Tomorrow she’ll be on The Diane Rehm Show.

The Colbert Report meets with journalist David Carr, whose book is The Night of the Gun: A Reporter Investigates the Darkest Story of His Life. His Own. (S&S, $26). PW said, "Unfortunately, the book is less a real investigation of his life than an anecdotal chronicle of wild behavior."

Over on The Early Show, bestselling author Philip Zimbardo and research partner John Boyd explained The Time Paradox: The New Psychology of Time That Will Change Your Life (Free Press, $27).

The Diane Rehm Show interviewed Ottawa Citizen columnist Daniel Gardner, who explained The Science of Fear: Why We Fear the Things We Shouldn't--and Put Ourselves in Greater Danger (Dutton, $27.95). PW said “Gardner's vivid, direct style, backed up by clear examples and solid data from science and psychology, brings a breath of fresh air and common sense to an emotional topic.”

Tonight, Tavis Smiley talks with historian Thurston Clarke, author of The Last Campaign: Robert F. Kennedy and 82 Days That Inspired America (Henry Holt, $25; HighBridge unabridged CD, $34.95), which PW found “is more revealing as an iconic portrait of the passionate, turbulent zeitgeist of the 1960s.”

Authors on yesterday’s Fresh Air:

Pulitzer-winning journalist John Darnton, with Black and White and Dead All Over (Knopf, $24.95; Brilliance Audio unabridged CD, $38.95), which PW found an “entertaining crime novel. Loaded with subtle social commentary and wry humor, this highly intelligent whodunit will keep readers guessing.”

Social critic Thomas Frank, author of The Wrecking Crew: How Conservatives Rule (Metropolitan Books, $25; Macmillan Audio unabridged CD, $39.95).

Due to the nature of live programming, scheduling is subject to change.
