ABFFE, ALA Launch Banned Books Site

By Rachel Deahl -- Publishers Weekly, 8/5/2008 12:35:00 PM

To put a spotlight on the upcoming Banned Books Week, ABFFE and the ALA have launched a website promoting the week-long celebration of the freedom to read. The site, www.bannedbooksweek.org, which is still in a soft launch mode, is intended to educate the public about Banned Books Week and highlight local events happening during the event's September 27 - October 4 run.

"We've never had a place where the public could easily find [Banned Books Week] events in their communities, so our hope is that this site will accomplish that," Chris Finan, ABFFE director, said. Judith Krug, of ALA, echoed that: "We wanted to increase the attention for Banned Books Week on the Web while simultaneously providing increased support for the bookstores and libraries that are mounting displays and sponsoring free speech events.” Although Finan said the content of the site is "still being fleshed out," it will likely feature a list of banned books in addition to the log of local events and participating libraries. The site is expected to officially launch the first week in September.
