Authors on the Air: Ted Sorensen; Siri Hustvedt; Bing West

by Diane Patrick -- Publishers Weekly, 8/14/2008

Authors re-airing on today’s Leonard Lopate Show:

JFK’s primary speechwriter and right hand man Ted Sorensen, with Counselor: A Life at the Edge of History (Harper, $27.95; HarperAudio abridged CD, $39.95). In a PW starred Signature Review, Michael Beschloss wrote “In this modest, elegant, appealing and introspective autobiography, Ted Sorensen writes about his service to John Kennedy as senator and president with a candor that, he confesses, would have been inconceivable while writing his glowing 1965 reminiscence, Kennedy, or while Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis was alive.”

Siri Hustvedt with her fourth novel, The Sorrows of an American (Holt, $25). PW’s starred review declared “Hustvedt continues, with grace and aplomb, her exploration of family connectedness, loss, grief and art.”

Journalist Matt Taibbi analyzed The Great Derangement: A Terrifying True Story of War, Politics, and Religion at the Twilight of the American Empire (Spiegel & Grau, $24). PW promised “Thoughtful Democrats, Republicans and independents will find common ground in this book that punctures pretense, hypocrisy and know-nothingness.”

This evening, The Colbert Reporthosts combat journalist Bing West, whose book The Strongest Tribe: War, Politics, and the Endgame In Iraq (Random House, $28) is just out this week.

On Tavis Smiley, journalist David Maraniss continues to promote Rome 1960: The Olympics That Changed the World (S&S, $26.95; S&S Audio abridged CD, $29.95).

Due to the nature of live programming, scheduling is subject to change.
