Woodward: Bush "Rarely Was the Voice of Realism on the Iraq War" and "Failed to Lead," reports Washington Post
The War Within by Bob Woodward also says the U.S. spies on the Iraqi prime minister. It cites the true reasons the surge worked. Woodward describes a strangely detached President Bush. When Woodward asked him why the surge received five brigades when the military said it could provide only two, Bush replied: "Okay, I don’t know this. I’m not in these meetings, you’ll be happy to hear, because I got other things to do." Bush also replaced Defense Secretary Rumsfeld with Robert Gates without consulting Vice President Cheney. Woodward also concluded that Bush "rarely was the voice of realism on the Iraq war" and "too often failed to lead." Post will begin excerpting book this Sunday. S&S book goes on sale Monday
