CBLDF Announces Involvement in Manga Obscenity Case

The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund recently announced that it will serve as a special consultant in a legal case involving an Iowa man, Christopher Handley, who has been charged by the federal government under the PROTECT Act for possessing manga that is allegedly obscene and contains drawings of underage characters involved in sex acts. Handley faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

NYCC 2009 Registration Opens

Registration for New York Comic Con is now open on the show's website. Weekend passes are $50, Saturday tickets are $40, and Friday and Sunday cost $30 each; Sunday is free for children under 12. Entrance for retailers, dealers, librarians, and educators is free during the trade hours of 10 am to 1 pm on Friday, and a trade professional weekend pass is $10. Complimentary registration is available for professional creators through November 15th. NYCC will be held February 6th through 8th at the Jacob Javits Center in New York City.

New Marvel Animated Series Announced

Marvel announced the production of a new animated series, The Avengers: The Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Film Roman is currently producing twenty-six half hour episodes, and the series is slated to be completed by 2011. The new X-Men series and Iron Man: Armored Adventures will air on Nicktoons in 2009, and the new series Marvel Super Hero Squad and a Black Panther animation will also debut next year.

Art Spiegelman Tour Hits San Francisco, NYC

Currently on tour to promote a new collection of his early work, Breakdowns: Portrait of the Artist as a Young %@&*!, and his Toon Books kids' title Jack in the Box, Art Spiegelman will be appearing at Books Inc. Opera Plaza in San Francisco on Tuesday, October 14th at 7 PM, and the Barnes and Noble in Tribeca in New York City on Monday, October 20th at 7 PM.

The Original Johnson on ComicMix

ComicMix is releasing The Original Johnson by Trevor von Eeden. The comic is the story of Jack Johnson, an African-American boxer. Installments of the 240 page graphic novel will be released weekly on Wednesdays at the ComicMix website

Luv Luv Press Online with Netcomics

The josei manga imprint of Aurora Publishing, Luv Luv Press, is providing their titles for purchase and viewing through the Netcomics’ website. The first releases will be in October, and after that one will be released each month. As per Netcomics’ format, readers can preview the first chapter of a title’s first release. The first Luv Luv title available is Voices of Love by Kanae Hazuki; the next release will be Real Love by Mitsuki Oda. Other future releases include Love for Dessert, Pretty Poison, Make Love & Peace, and Sounds of Love.

Free Marvel Ultimatum Saga Online

Marvel is presenting March on Ultimatum Saga for free on Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited. Written by Stuart Vidal, March on Ultimatum Saga chronicles the events of the Ultimate Universe, leading up to Ultimatum. Ultimatum #1 will go on sale on November 5th.
