Doubleday Cuts 16

-- Publishers Weekly, 10/28/2008 9:31:00 AM

Sixteen positions at Random House's Doubleday Broadway Publishing Group have been eliminated. According to David Drake the cuts, which were made across the entire group--Doubleday, Broadway, Nan Talese, Spiegel & Grau and Waterbrook Multnomah were all affected--include people in editorial, marketing and publicity, art and ad promo and reception.

Drake said the cuts were initiated by group head Steve Rubin and did not happen as part of a larger corporate mandate, and came about after "close review" was made of the division's publishing operations over the summer. The analysis, combined with the fact that "the entire industry is facing a difficult prospect in the retail" area, spurred the decision, Drake said. He added that the majority of the cuts eliminated support staff positions.
