Pan Macmillan Signs with Lexcycle’s Stanza

by Craig Morgan Teicher -- Publishers Weekly, 11/25/2008 8:19:00 AM

Portland, Ore-based Lexcycle, makers of the Stanza e-book reader for iPhone, and Pan Macmillan, a UK wing of the Macmillan that includes the imprints Picador, Macmillan Children’s Books and Tor UK, announced a content partnership yesterday. The first set of titles was made available yesterday, and, according the Lexcycle, more titles will be added over the next 12 months. Currently available Pan Macmillan authors include Clive James, Peter F. Hamilton and China Mieville. As Stanza does not currently have its own e-commerce capabilities, previews of Pan Macmillan titles are available through the Stanza application, though purchases must be made on Pan Macmillan’s own site. This announcement follows a similar partnership with romance novel publisher Samhain. Previously, Stanza was mostly used to reading public domain and other free content.

According to Lexcycle CEO Neelan Choksi, roughly 550,000 in 50 countries have already downloaded the Stanza e-book reader, which is available for iPhone, PC and Mac. Stanza currently has partnerships with several online retailers, including the French company Feedbooks, through which books are available directly through the Stanza application. Lexcycle plans to implement an e-commerce solution in the future. Stanza natively supports the DRM free ePub format.
