Chronicle Books Makes Cuts

Publishing’s layoffs have spread across the country with Chronicle Books laying off under 5% of its staff on Monday. Company president Jack Jensen said that given the outlook for 2009 and a planned reduction in its adult output for 2010, the company was forced to downsize. Jensen said that while children’s sales have grown, the company, like most publishers, has seen a steady decline in backlist sales.
Chronicle has been publishing about 200 titles annually with a backlist of 1,500.
