In somewhat of a surprise choice, Simon & Schuster CEO Carolyn Reidy has named Jon Anderson to succeed Rick Richter as head of the S&S children’s publishing division. He joins S&S as executive v-p and publisher, effective January 21. At Running Press, Anderson has served as president and publisher since 2004. Running Press has a relatively small but growing children’s operation, which is perhaps best known for Cathy’s Book, a YA novel that combined print and multimedia components and featured an aggressive online promotional campaign.

“I’m thrilled that a publishing executive as talented and versatile as Jon Anderson will be joining Simon & Schuster to lead our children’s publishing division,” said Reidy in a statement. “He is a truly original thinker who brings great creativity, financial and business acumen, and managerial skill to all his publishing endeavors, and he is the right person to build upon our rich legacy in children’s publishing.”

Before going to Running Press, Mr. Anderson was publisher of Price Stern Sloan and DreamWorks at Penguin, and had been a merchandise manager and buyer at Barnes & Noble. Under the pen name William Boniface, Anderson is also the author of more than two dozen books for young people, including the Extraordinary Adventures of Ordinary Boy series for HarperCollins.

Richter, who had been president of the division for five years, left S&S last month, along with senior v-p and publisher Rubin Pfeffer. There had been much industry speculation during the last few weeks over who would succeed Richter, with many prominent names in children's publishing believed to have been interviewed for the job.

David Steinberger, president of Running Press parent Perseus Books Group, said the company will soon begin a search to find a replacement for Anderson. Until a successor is found, all staff that reported to Anderson will report to Running Press associate publisher Craig Herman.
