Starbucks Picks Gillies' 'Happens Every Day'

By Rachel Deahl -- Publishers Weekly, 2/24/2009 8:11:00 AM

Continuing its tradition of featuring inspirational memoirs, Starbucks has selected Isabel Gillies's Happens Every Day: An All-Too-True Story, which Scribner is releasing on March 24. Gillies, who has a recurring minor role as Elliot Stabler's wife on the NBC show Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, chronicles the collapse of her marriage in the book. Starbucks's push will now see the title, which is also appearing in this month's Vogue, featured in more than 7,000 of its stores.

Most recently the coffee chain featured the illustrated fable The Traveler by Daniel and Darren Simkin; before that, it featured a string of memoirs that included Helene Cooper's The House at Sugar Beach: In Search of a Lost African Childhood, about the author's coming-of-age in Liberia in the 1980s; David Sheff's memoir about dealing with his son's meth addiction, Beautiful Boy; Listening Is an Act of Love, a collection inspirational histories from "everyday people"; and Ishmael Beah's memoir about being a boy soldier in Sierra Leone, A Long Way Gone.
