French Favor Coben, House

-- Publishers Weekly, 4/20/2009

French favorite Harlan Coben landed in the top spot in France in March with the release of Hold Tight. Debuting in third place was another author well known to Americans, Hugh Laurie, the British-born star of the hit television show House. Laurie's The Gun Seller was first published in English in 1996 and translated into French this year to take advantage of the growing popularity of House in France. Gun Seller, which Washington Square Press published in 1998, is a spy spoof. In the U.K., Laurie's next book, The Paper Soldier, is due out this fall from Michael Joseph.

Debuting in the top spot in the Netherlands was Dutch thriller writer Saskia Noort's latest mystery, The Transformation. Noort's previous works have been published in English by U.K.-based Bitter Lemon Press and its titles are distributed in the U.S. by Consortium, which will release her next title, Back to the Coast, in June. Landing in the fifth spot in Holland was The Solitude of Prime Numbers, the Italian bestseller by Paolo Giordano that was acquired by Pam Dorman for her Viking imprint.

Newcomers to the nonfiction list in the Netherlands include My Life as a Dog by Dutch columnist Martin Bril.
