Authors on the Air: Ruth Reichl; Colson Whitehead; Bill Gates Sr.

Compiled by Diane Patrick -- Publishers Weekly, 4/29/2009 2:56:00 PM

Authors on today’s Leonard Lopate Show:

  • Ruth Reichl, whose new book is Not Becoming My Mother: and Other Things She Taught Me Along the Way (Penguin, 978-1594202162, $19.95; Penguin Audio unabridged CD, $24.95). PW’s starred review promised “Reichl has created a masterful portrait of a mother-daughter relationship that will resonate with readers across generations.”
  • Colson Whitehead, with Sag Harbor: A Novel (Doubleday, 978-0385527651, $24.95; RH Audio unabridged CD, $39.95). From PW’s starred review: “Benji's funny and touching story progresses leisurely toward Labor Day, but his reflections on what's gone before provide a roadmap to what comes later, resolving social conflicts that, at least this year, have yet to explode.”

The Diane Rehm Show interviewed eighty-something Bill Gates Sr., author of Showing Up for Life: Thoughts on the Gifts of a Lifetime (Broadway Business, 978-0385527019, $22). Last night, he stopped by Charlie Rose.

NPR’s Marketplace hosted public radio reporter Matthew Algeo, author of Harry Truman's Excellent Adventure: The True Story of a Great American Road Trip (Chicago Review Press, 978-1556527777, $24.95). PW found it a “fascinating reconstruction of Harry and Bess Truman's postpresidential 2,500-mile road trip. With deliberate detours, this book is a portal into the past with layers of details providing unusual authenticity and a portrait of the president as an ordinary man.”

The Bob Edwards Show hosted retired army colonel Andrew Bacevich, whose The Limits of Power: The End of American Exceptionalism (Holt, 978-0805090161, $14; Macmillan Audio unabridged CD, $29.95) is just out in paperback. PW’s review had this to say: “Crisp prose, sweeping historical analysis and searing observations on the roots of American decadence elevate this book from mere scolding to an urgent call for rational thinking and measured action, for citizens to wise up and put their house in order.”

Dr. Phil hosts personal finance columnist Liz Pulliam Weston, author of Your Credit Score, Your Money & What's at Stake (Updated Edition): How to Improve the 3-Digit Number that Shapes Your Financial Future (FT Press, 978-0137016617, $18.99).

This evening on The Colbert Report: Dr. David Kessler, former FDA commissioner under presidents Bush and Clinton and author of The End of Overeating: Taking Control of the Insatiable American Appetite (Rodale, 978-1605297859, $25.95; Rodale unabridged CD, $29.99). PW’s review had this to say: “A gentle though urgent plea for reform, Kessler's book provides a simple food rehab program to fight back against the industry's relentless quest for profits while an entire country of people gain weight and get sick.”

Time for Hope talks with Daniel P. Schrock, author of The Dark Night: A Gift of God (Herald Press, 978-0836194258, $16.99).

On Tavis Smiley, Kristin Chenoweth continues promoting A Little Bit Wicked: Life, Love, and Faith in Stages (Touchstone, 978-1416580553, $25; SpringWater unabridged CD, $32.99). PW wrote “Chenoweth has a frenzied, free-associative style; it's as if she's speaking breathlessly into a tape recorder between sitcom scenes. To use her phrase, this book is ‘a hoot and a holler’—a fast-paced frolic that her fans will appreciate.”

Yesterday, NPR’s Morning Edition marked the ending of National Poetry Month by chatting with Karen Jo Shapiro, whose children’s book I Must Go Down to the Beach Again: And Other Poems (Charlesbridge, 9781580891448, $5.95) lightly parodies 23 classic British and American poems.

Due to the nature of live programming, scheduling is subject to change.
