Authors on the Air: James Carville; Elisabeth Hasselbeck; Requiem for a Paper Bag

Compiled by Diane Patrick -- Publishers Weekly, 5/4/2009 10:02:00 AM

Today both Good Morning America and The View hosted…

  • Democratic strategist James Carville, whose new book is 40 More Years: How the Democrats Will Rule the Next Generation (S&S, 978-1416569893, $24; Tantor Media CD, $29.99). He also appeared on The Leonard Lopate Show.
  • View co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck explained The G-Free Diet: A Gluten-Free Survival Guide (Center Street, 978-1599951881, $24.99). She’ll also visit Sean Hannity

On The Diane Rehm Show, Frank Partnoy introduced The Match King: Ivar Kreuger, The Financial Genius Behind a Century of Wall Street Scandals (PublicAffairs, 978-1586487430, $26.95). PW starred its review, calling it “a thrilling account of the grandfather of all Ponzi and Madoff schemes. Partnoy achieves a nuanced portrait of the charismatic and corrupt financial genius whose advice was sought by Herbert Hoover and other heads of state. A fascinating depiction of a man and his era, this book is a snapshot of a time all too familiar now.”

On The Leonard Lopate Show, television host and bestselling author Tavis Smiley discussed Accountable: Making America as Good as Its Promise (Atria, 978-1439100028, $19.99; S&S Audio CD, $29.99). From PW’s audiobook review: “Ever the consummate professional, Smiley delivers his message of hope and promise with a commanding tone that demands his audience's attention. His candid and polished reading gives his political messages an arresting personal touch.”

Tonight on his own show, Tavis Smiley talks with Thomas Cahill, author of A Saint on Death Row: The Story of Dominique Green (Nan A. Talese, 978-0385520195, $18.95). PW thought “Given the spiritual and literary license Cahill takes, one must read this less as a reasoned argument than an impassioned, very personal plea against racism, poverty and the death penalty.”

Yesterday, Meet the Press interviewed Richard Haass, president of the Council on Foreign Relations and a former adviser to Secretary of State Colin Powell, whose War of Necessity, War of Choice: A Memoir of Two Iraq Wars (Simon & Schuster, 978-1416549024, $27) is just out this week. PW called it “a combination of memoir and analysis on two wars that, he says, began in 1990. Wars of choice are not inevitably mistaken, Haass concludes, but they are best avoided.”

On Saturday, NPR's Weekend Edition met with bestseller Davy Rothbart, whose new book is Requiem for a Paper Bag: Celebrities and Civilians Tell Stories of the Best Lost, Tossed, and Found Items from Around the World (Fireside, 978-1416560548, $15.99).

Due to the nature of live programming, scheduling is subject to change.
