Authors on the Air: How to Shop for a Husband; Andy Andrews; Aleksandar Hemon

Compiled by Diane Patrick -- Publishers Weekly, 5/14/2009 2:56:00 PM

This morning, Today hosted consumer reporter Janice Lieberman, whose How to Shop for a Husband: A Consumer Guide to Getting a Great Buy on a Guy (St. Martin's Press, 978-0312549985, $22.95) is just out this week.

On Good Morning America, bestselling inspirational writer and speaker Andy Andrews introduced The Noticer: Sometimes, All a Person Needs Is a Little Perspective. (Thomas Nelson, 978-0785229216, $17.99; Thomas Nelson CD, $22.99). From PW’s review: “Andrews again blends fiction, allegory and inspiration and seasons it with a dash of autobiography. The title is awkward and not everyone likes motivational books, but many readers do. Andrews brings a track record, wordsmith skills and, best of all, an imagination.”

On The Leonard Lopate Show: Bosnian-born writer Aleksandar Hemon, whose Love and Obstacles (Riverhead, 978-1594488641, $25.95) pubs today. In its starred review, PW said he “again beautifully twists the language in this collection of eight powerful and disquieting stories. Writing with steely control and an antic eye, Hemon has assembled another extraordinary work.”

Authors on today’s Diane Rehm Show:

  • Jill Jonnes, author of Eiffel's Tower: And the World's Fair Where Buffalo Bill Beguiled Paris, the Artists Quarreled, and Thomas Edison Became a Count (Viking Adult, 978-0670020607, $27.95). PW found it “an atmospheric overview of the celebrities who made belle époque Paris their stage during the memorable event.”
  • Doug Scott, policy director of the Campaign for America's Wilderness and author of Our Wilderness: America's Common Ground (Fulcrum Publishing, 978-1555916411, $19.95).

On The View, Brooke Shields talked about her new children's book It's the Best Day Ever, Dad! (HarperCollins, 978-0061724459, $17.99).

Authors on The Morning Show with Mike & Juliet

  • Relationship expert Dr. Michelle R. Callahan, author of Ms. Typed: Discover Your True Dating Personality and Rewrite Your Romantic Future (Crown, 978-0307408006, $22).
  • Ricki Lake, co-author of Your Best Birth: Know All Your Options, Discover the Natural Choices, and Take Back the Birth Experience (Wellness Central, 978-0446538138, $22.99).

Bob Edwards talked to bioethicist Peter Singer, whose new book is The Life You Can Save: Acting Now to End World Poverty (Random House, 978-1400067107, $22). PW’s starred review had this to say: “Part plea, part manifesto, part handbook, this short and surprisingly compelling book sets out to answer two difficult questions: why people in affluent countries should donate money to fight global poverty and how much each should give. Singer doesn’t ask readers to choose between asceticism and self-indulgence; his solution can be found in the middle, and it is reasonable and rewarding for all.”

KCRW's Bookworm met with Gary Indiana, author of The Shanghai Gesture (Two Dollar Radio, 978-0982015100, $15.50), which PW said “seems to aim for gonzo social satire, but it lacks the genuine human experience that makes such commentary effective.”

Dr. Phil sparred with UFC light-heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin, whose Got Fight? The 50 Zen Principles of Hand-to-Face Combat (William Morrow, 978-0061721717, $23.99) pubs next month.

Glenn Beck interviewed economists Robert Shiller and George Akerlof, authors of Animal Spirits: How Human Psychology Drives the Economy, and Why It Matters for Global Capitalism (Princeton Univ. Press, 978-0691142333, $24.95).

Tonight, Tavis Smiley talks with Michael Fauntroy, assistant professor at the George Mason School of Public Policy and author of Republicans and the Black Vote (Lynne Rienner, 978-1588265722, $22).

The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson hosts bestseller Laura Lippman, whose new novel is Life Sentences (William Morrow, 978-0061128899, $24.99; HarperAudio unabridged CD, $39.99) which PW’s starred review called a “stunning stand-alone… a rich, complex journey from self-deception to self-discovery.”

Due to the nature of live programming, scheduling is subject to change.
