Today’s the opening of the movie Angels & Demons, directed by Ron Howard, starring Tom Hanks and based on Dan Brown’s Angels & Demons (Washington Square Press reprint, 978-1416580829, $16; S&S Audio abridged CD, $30). PW’s review said “this well-plotted if over-the-top thriller is crammed with Vatican intrigue and high-tech drama. Though its premises strain credulity, Brown's tale is laced with twists and shocks that keep the reader wired right up to the last revelation.” The movie tie-in is Angels & Demons: The Illustrated Movie Companion by Linda Sunshine (Newmarket Press, 978-1557048332, $19.95).
Martha Stewart previewed her new cookbook Martha Stewart's Cupcakes: 175 Inspired Ideas for Everyone's Favorite Treat (Clarkson Potter, 978-0307460448, $24.99), which comes out next month.
On The Bob Edwards Show, psychologist and journalist Ira Rosofsky discussed Nasty, Brutish, and Long: Adventures in Old Age and the World of Eldercare (Avery, 978-1583333365, $25). PW thought “What could have been a morose account of loss, suffering and death is lightened by the humorous and helpful treatment of an emotionally laden topic.”
Some of the authors on this weekend’s Book TV:
- Musician and writer Zachary Mexico reveals China Underground (Soft Skull Press, 978-1593762230, $16.95). PW said “Mexico is a remarkably eloquent and perceptive participant-observer. The overall effect is a seamless portrait of a complex modern society in which an ancient culture persists in spite of lightning-speed economic changes.”
- Richard Beeman, a noted historian of the late 18th century and author of Plain, Honest Men: The Making of the American Constitution (Random House, 978-1400065707, $30; Tantor Media unabridged CD, $49.99). From PW’s starred review: “In this masterful account, Beeman does his best to dramatize the writing of the American Constitution. This account is now the most authoritative, up-to-date treatment of the Constitutional Convention since Catherine Drinker Bowen's Miracle at Philadelphia over 40 years ago. It's unlikely to be surpassed.”
- Edward Nixon, younger brother of President Richard Nixon and co-author of The Nixons: A Family Portrait (Book Publishers Network, 978-1935359050, $27.95).
- Steve Milloy goes to Green Hell: How Environmentalists Plan to Ruin Your Life and What You Can Do to Stop Them (Regnery Publishing, 978-1596985858, $27.95; Blackstone Audiobooks CD, $24.95).
- Bestseller Thomas Woods, with Meltdown: A Free-Market Look at Why the Stock Market Collapsed, the Economy Tanked, and Government Bailouts Will Make Things Worse (Regnery Publishing, 978-1596985872, $27.95; Tantor Media unabridged CD, $24.99).
- David Korten shares Agenda for a New Economy: From Phantom Wealth to Real Wealth (Berrett-Koehler, 978-1605092898, $14.95).
- Arnie Bernstein recalls Bath Massacre: America's First School Bombing (Univ. of Michigan Press, 978-0472033461, $18.95).
- Edwin Black, author of Nazi Nexus: America's Corporate Connections to Hitler's Holocaust (Dialog Press, 978-0914153092, $19.95).
- Blog impresario Jeff Jarvis wonders What Would Google Do? (Collins Business, 978-0061709715, $26.99; HarperAudio unabridged CD, $39.99). PW thought “his attempt to cover too many topics reads more like a series of frenzied blog posts than a manifesto for the Internet age.”
Due to the nature of live programming, scheduling is subject to change.
