Rosen To Leave PowerHouse Books

By Calvin Reid -- Publishers Weekly, 5/27/2009 8:07:00 AM

After nine years of organizing marketing, publicity and highly unusual special events programming for powerHouse Books, the Brooklyn-based art and photography book publisher, Sara Rosen will leave the company effective June 5. She is launching Miss Rosen, a new media company specializing in “promoting arts and culture in the form of books, exhibitions, workshops, and special events,” and will start a twice-a-month events newsletter called Miss Rosen Presents.

Rosen joined powerHouse in 2000 working closely with powerHouse founder Dan Power and associate publisher Craig Cohen, to help grow powerHouse from a small Manhattan startup firm publishing one or two books a year into an influential publisher releasing more than 50 books a year on art, photography Hip Hop, advertising and contemporary culture. PW profiled Rosen in the November 24 issue.

A flamboyant and stylish figure on the New York City indie book scene, Rosen specializes in edgy events and hip hop influenced parties thrown in powerHouse’s spawling Brooklyn Arena office/gallery and elsewhere that attracted new authors to the powerHouse list and new readers interested in books documenting the latest trends in art and international popular culture. “Unlike the industry’s standard wine-and-cheese affairs,” Rosen told PW, “we have always prided ourselves on unforgettable events that combine the high style of the club scene with the cultural cachet of the art world.”

She also directed her own imprint at powerHouse, Ms. Rosen Editions, and she told PW she plans to launch the imprint’s last two titles before she leaves. On June 4, she has organized a party to launch Pillage by Brantly Martin, the first novel published by powerHouse books; and on June 7 she plans to launch Its Just Begun, a memoir by DJ DisCo Wiz, with a Hip Hop festival at the powerHouse Arena.
