Dalmatian Closes California Offices

By Jim Milliot -- Publishers Weekly, 6/19/2009 12:00:00 PM

Dalmatian Publishing Group has closed the Santa Monica offices of its Intervisual Books and Piggy Toes Press imprints and transferred its operations to Dalmatian’s Atlanta headquarters. Dalmatian acquired Intervisual, once renowned for its pop-up children’s books, in summer 2006 after the company filed for bankruptcy. The company had always been based in southern California.

Mary Counts, who has been president of Intervisual and Whitman Publishing, will become more directly involved with Intervisual and Piggy Toes. Counts said she is "still working out the details" about what staff will work on what projects and whether any employees from Santa Monica will remain involved with the imprints. Intervisual and Piggy Toes publisher Debra Mostow Zakarin will not be joining Dalmatian in Atlanta, but will serve in an editor-at-large" position. "

According to Counts, Dalmatian will continue to publish a "full range" of titles under the two imprints, including some Intervisual pop-up books. Because of the current economic environment, fewer titles could come out of the imprints, with Counts explaining that the company is working on publishing plans for 2010, 2011 and 2012.
