Authors on the Air: And Then The Roof Caved In; Donald Rumsfeld, Unwrapped; Tennis Strokes

Compiled by Diane Patrick -- Publishers Weekly, 6/22/2009 9:35:00 AM

This morning, both the Today show and MSNBC’s Morning Joe talked with CNBC correspondent David Faber, whose And Then The Roof Caved In: How Wall Street’s Greed and Stupidity Brought Capitalism to Its Knees (Wiley, 978-0470474235, $26.95) pubs tomorrow.

On both NPR’s Fresh Air and C-SPAN’s Washington Journal, longtime Washington Post reporter Bradley Graham played By His Own Rules: The Story of Donald Rumsfeld (PublicAffairs, 978-1586484217, $35), just out this week.

The Early Show chatted with talk show host Reba Toney, author of The Rating Game: The Foolproof Formula for Finding Your Perfect Soul Mate (St. Martin's Griffin, 978-0312383985, $14.95).

NPR’s Marketplace and Bloomberg TV’s Morning Call on Bloomberg marked the start of Wimbledon with sports writer L. Jon Wertheim, whose book is Strokes of Genius: Federer, Nadal, and the Greatest Match Ever Played (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 978-0547232805, $24).

On The Diane Rehm Show, Michael and Elizabeth Norman shed Tears in the Darkness: The Story of the Bataan Death March and Its Aftermath (FS&G, 978-0374272609, $30; Tantor Media unabridged CD, $39.99). PW’s review had this to say: “This grimly absorbing history revisits the worst ordeal Americans experienced during WWII. There's sorrow but not much pity in this story; as all human aspiration shrivels to a primal obsession with food and water, flashes of compassion and artistic remembrance only occasionally light the gloom.”

The Leonard Lopate Show interviewed Bill Wasik, senior editor at Harper's magazine and author of And Then There's This: How Stories Live and Die in Viral Culture (Viking, 978-0670020843, $25.95). PW wrote “Wasik's examples are culled from the trivial—e.g., ephemeral indie bands and forgettable ad campaigns—but his deft style and provocative insights keep the book significant.”

The Morning Show with Mike & Juliet talked with former baseball All Star Darryl Strawberry about Straw: Finding My Way (Ecco, 978-0061704208, $26.99), which PW found “a readable book, though not a probing one.”

Oprah re-airs an interview with Steve Dublanica (aka The Waiter), author of Waiter Rant: Thanks for the Tip--Confessions of a Cynical Waiter (Ecco, 978-0061256684, $24.95; Brilliance Audio unabridged CD, $36.95).

This evening on The Daily Show: NBA Hall of Famer and bestseller Bill Russell, whose latest is Red and Me: My Coach, My Lifelong Friend (HarperCollins, 978-0061766145, $32.99).

On The Colbert Report, historian Simon Schama discusses The American Future: A History (Ecco, 978-0060539238, $29.99), which PW’s starred review deemed a “lively meditation on American history. He's alive to irony and hypocrisy in the American story… but Schama is optimistic that the nation's perennial openness and complexity can see it through the storm clouds ahead.”

The Late Show with David Letterman hosts popular TV personality and restaurateur Emeril Lagasse, whose latest cookbook is Emeril at the Grill: A Cookbook for All Seasons (HarperStudio, 978-0061742743, $24.99). PW wrote “After a dozen cookbooks, Lagasse is unflagging in his enthusiasm and encouragement for home cooks, evidenced by this dense appreciation of all things grilled. Grillers looking to broaden their repertoire are likely to find more than a few new standards here.”

Tonight, Tavis Smiley talks with U.S. foreign policy expert and professor Trita Parsi, president of the National Iranian Council and author of Treacherous Alliance: The Secret Dealings of Israel, Iran, and the United States (Yale Univ. Press, 978-0300143119, $17).

Due to the nature of live programming, scheduling is subject to change.

Booksellers can order these titles through Ingram at ipage .
