Today, Good Morning America talked with Julie Metz about Perfection: A Memoir of Betrayal and Renewal (Voice, 978-1401322557, $23.99), which PW called a “dark and affecting memoir. Metz's road to emotional honesty proves cautionary and trying.”
Today’s the opening of the computer-animated / digital 3-D movie Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, starring the voices of Ray Romano, Queen Latifah, Denis Leary and John Leguizamo. Movie tie-ins: Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs: The Essential Guide (DK, 978-0756651657, $14.99) as well as several from HarperEntertainment, including Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs: The Junior Novel (978-0061689802, $5.99); … The Movie Storybook (978-0061689819, $7.99); … My Three Dads (978-0061689758, $3.99); … Sid-napped! (978-0061689765, $3.99) and … Made You Look! (978-0061692444, $4.99).
This evening on The Daily Show , Rep. Henry Waxman, the mustached congressman from California, discusses The Waxman Report: How Congress Really Works (Twelve, 978-0446519250, $24.99), which goes on sale tomorrow. PW found it “a very readable insider's account of his 35 years in the House. The book frequently reads too much like a civics lesson to be fully engrossing, but the explanation of the workings of a widely misunderstood government body is a public service from a committed civil servant.”
Diane Rehm interviewed Washington Post reporter Christian Davenport, author of As You Were: To War and Back with the Black Hawk Battalion of the Virginia National Guard (Wiley, 978-0470373613, $25.95). PW thought “This book honors well the citizen-soldiers of the National Guard and the Army, Navy and Marine Corps Reserves, while giving readers a vivid sense of life before, during and after engagement in a far-off war.”
Iranian authors on today’s Leonard Lopate Show :
- Documentary filmmaker and poet Roya Hakakian, who wrote Journey from the Land of No: A Girlhood Caught in Revolutionary Iran (Three Rivers Press, 978-0609810309, $13). From PW’s review: “Political upheavals like the fall of the Shah of Iran and the rise of Islamic fundamentalism may be analyzed endlessly by scholars, but eyewitness accounts like Hakakian's help us understand what it was like to experience such a revolution firsthand. Hakakian's story—so reminiscent of the experiences of Jews in Nazi Germany—is haunting.”
- Azar Nafisi, author of Things I've Been Silent About: Memories (Random House, 978-1400063611, $27; RH Audio abridged CD, $29.95). PW wrote “The calm candor with which she narrates her experiences, from childhood sexual abuse to a frightening confrontation when her second husband argues with a religious zealot over her unscarved hair, provides a solid emotional anchor—and the intimate drama at her memoir's core, the conflicting frustration with a parent and the desire for connection, is one that will resonate with readers everywhere.”
Bob Edwards met with celebrated songwriting duo Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, authors of Hound Dog: The Leiber & Stoller Autobiography (S&S, 978-1416559382, $25), which PW called a “sprightly memoir. There's not a lot of deep insight into the creative process — the authors seem to have written most of their songs on 15 minutes' notice — just vignettes from pop music's giddy youth, short and sweet and catchy.”
The Colbert Report talks with Lee Siegel, author of Against the Machine: How the Web Is Reshaping Culture and Commerce -- and Why It Matters (Spiegel & Grau, 978-0385522663, $14).
Due to the nature of live programming, scheduling is subject to change.
