Levy, Zafon in Fiction; Mosterd In Nonfiction

-- Publishers Weekly, 8/17/2009

Marc Levy, who scored a #1 bestseller last summer in France with All Those Things We Never Said, is back on the top of the charts this July with The First Day, a thriller about how the origins of the universe are different than believed. Though his books have been translated into 41 languages, Levy has had little success in the U.S. An international author enjoying success in the U.S. now is Carlos Ruiz Zafón; his newest, The Angel's Game, was tops in the Netherlands (and 411 at Amazon in the U.S.). An older title, Marina, debuted in the third spot in Italy. Debuting just below Marina is a collection of stories by the Italian journalist Roberto Saviano, whose Gomorrah, a look at organized crime in Naples, was a huge bestseller in Italy two years ago and was released in the U.S. by Farrar, Straus & Giroux.

In nonfiction, Maria Mosterd, the now 19-year-old whose first book about her troubled life, Real Men Don't Eat Cheese, was a bestseller in the Netherlands last year, has returned with an account of her life after escaping from her pimp. Cheese was #4 on the list, and her new one, Bindi, is in second place. A book by her mother, Lucie, was #8 on the nonfiction list.
